I’ll lay my cards on the table right off the bat and confess what in some circles could be considered sacrilege – I’m not a fan of comic books. I’ve never read any, and I couldn’t tell you the story behind Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man if my life depended on it. All of my knowledge of ’superheroes’ comes from the movies, and I’d even label that knowledge mediocre at best. “Superman” wasn’t my kind of movie, “Batman” (in his many leading actor incarnations) wasn’t up my alley either, and I went into the theater for Spider-Man just hoping it would live up to half of its hype. Half would have been nice, but “Spider-Man” pulled off the near impossible – it lived up to a full 75% of the hoopla and was close to nudging its way 85-90% when it backed off just a smidge (smidge – such a technical term for a movie review).

Tobey Maguire, while wildly questioned and almost literally spat upon by Spidey comic book loyalists when he won the sought after role, is perfect as he brings the webslinger to life in an astounding manner. With Maguire, it’s all in the eyes. He can tell a story without uttering a word. As Peter Parker, graduating high school student and the much picked upon class nerd, Maguire makes you feel every bit of ridicule he undergoes. He draws you into his world, the world where his best friend is also an outcast, the love of his life – Mary Jane – lives next door but hasn’t a clue how he feels, and where he’s raised in a loving home by an elderly aunt and uncle whose very embrace sets the world aright.

Depp claims his inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow came from mixing Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards and the cartoon skunk, Pepe Le Pew. Interesting idea – taking a pirate and infusing in him the characteristics of one of rock and roll’s most out there stars. The Pepe Le Pew thing I don’t get, but Depp’s a genius so he must have had a reason for that bizarre choice. What ends up on screen is a pirate who staggers around like one of those Weebles I had as a kid (the toy that wobbles but doesn’t fall down). He sashays, struts, and basically Weebles his way through the film.

It’s time to get Lost. J .J. Abrams’ latest series starts tonight and while the premiere will be long on questions and short on answers, the promise of the pilot episode is enough to leave viewers wanting more. Survivors of an international airline flight awaken to find themselves on a tropical island after unusually strong turbulence breaks the plane apart. If you’ve ever had a problem with air travel, the flashbacks the main characters have to the crash will make you never want to step on a plane ever again. The first character the audience is introduced to is a doctor named Jack (Matthew Fox, Party of Five). Jack wanders onto the beach where he is greeted by the shocked and the wounded. Taking charge, Jack immediately starts setting up triage, treating as much of the wounded as possible, even enlisting one of the other passengers, Kate (Evangeline Lilly, Kingdom Hospital) to help stitch up one of his own wounds.

The passengers deal with the initial shock in a variety of ways. While Jack and Kate try to bring the group together in what may be a fight for survival, others choose to sit and wait for the rescue that may never come. A non-English-speaking Korean couple, Jin (Daniel Dae Kim, Crusade & Angel ) and Sun (Yunjin Kim), segregate themselves from the others, finding their ways to different from the rest of the survivors. A Middle Eastern man fights the racial profiling from some of the other survivors while a vaguely strange older man (Terry O’Quinn, Millennium) sits on the beach, just taking it all in. A rock star (Dominic Monaghan, Lord of the Rings) tries his best to help out but a drug addiction may threaten his own life and those around him. A very pregnant woman worries that her child hasn’t survived the ordeal.

I have never seen the first three films in the Fast/Furious franchise. I went to a screening of the fourth, Fast and Furious, in order to conduct a research experiment that I’ve been wanting to try for awhile: how do late-in-the game sequels parcel out information about the worlds their predecessors have created, and do they even try to convert new fans, or simply satisfy old ones? Keeping in mind that I entered into this enterprise with science as a primary motivator over criticism, here is a summary of my findings:

1. In the first scene, Michelle Rodriguez and Vin Diesel are together in a car, driving alongside an oil truck on a twisty mountain road. Apparently in cahoots with two other pairs in two other cars (both of whom, audience reaction would suggest, are familiar from previous films in the franchise), Vin and Michelle are planning to use their driving skills to steal gas. When the time is right, Michelle kisses Vin (thus telling us that they are a couple — and, since IMDB indicates they haven’t been in a Fast & Furious film together since the franchise’s opening salvo in 2001, they’ve presumably been together without incident for the eight years in between), then climbs out the window of the moving car, announcing the film’s rallying cry and raison d’etre as she moves: “Let’s make some money!” Wink wink, LOL y’all, although in a world where Tina Fey addresses the sponsors of the TV show she produces whilst in front of the camera as its star, for a quadquel to pointedly anticipate and address criticism that it’s a stale leftover reheated for cash before the opening action setpiece even kicks into high gear, feels weirdly stale and reheated in itself.

As a kid one of the few comics I actually read were Spiderman and Wolverine. I will admit I never really got into the origins of Logan and although I knew the key elements about Sabretooth being his arch enemy and SilverFox being his slain love I didn’t know the story of his childhood and found it quite interesting to watch it unfold on the big screen. The movie has also fired up my urges to go pickup a couple of back issues of Wolverine and dive deep into the Weapon X comics and how they told the origins of Wolverine just to see how it compares to the film.

‘Wolverine’ is a spin-off movie broken off from the X-Men series. In this movie we can expect to find out more about Wolverine’s past, as he travels the globe in search of his lost memory.

Overall Wolverine delivered as a fun video game paced movie that had plenty of action, just enough grittiness and enough good writing to drive the story along at a very fast pace that definitely impressed the very loud theatre audience I saw the film with tonight. I felt that they did a very good job at showing Logan’s upbringing and delving into the complicated relationship between him and Sabretooth and even those in the audience who had never read a single comic would have had enough understanding to then follow the whole movie.

It was nice that they didn’t make the film to overly cliche especially when they covered the unusual relationship between Sabretooth and Wolverine. Although PG-13 they were also not afraid to push the line where it fit the story with certain characters like DeadPool and they certainly didn’t try and make a sugar coated X-Men movie. This movie although by no means as dark as Batman Begins and Dark Knight is also not light and fluffy like the X-Men movies. It could have been darker but it was considering its rating a pretty good PG-13 telling of a very violent mutant.

It was also nice to see so many different mutants in the movie including Young Cyclops, The Blob and my personal favorite Deadpool. The movie had a nice mix of elements that made the movie a great waste of 90minutes and in my view a fun comic book movie although admittedly not the best comic book movie I have seen. The movie lacked the magic of The Dark Knight but it certainly had some of the light heartedness of Iron Man and was a definite leap above the X-Men movies which for me were just to tame. I would say if you liked X-Men and are a fan of the Wolverine Character you will definitely enjoy this movie. Go and check it out and just remember its not going to wow you with any deep thinking but it will tell you the origins of Wolverine in a fast paced and fun environment.

I did notice quite a few scenes were missing from the movie including a scene with Young Storm and a beech sequence with SilverFox. So it seems the movie has a few alternate sceens for DVD and with some luck we will get an unrated extended DVD cut that offers more then the typical cliche 30seconds of extras. Clearly the Young Storm scene comes from when Weapon X is in Africa but I am not sure how the alternate Silver Fox scene would work. Here is hoping we can get more of the Africa Mission and lots more character development in the DVD Release that may have been cut out for the theatrical release to cut the time down.
